OUR STORY

Bookleggers was founded in 2012 as bookstores across the country continued closing and Miami’s public library system began facing consistent budgetary cuts.

These looming threats persist, allowing Bookleggers to fill a much needed space for person-to-person literary community in Miami.

The book sharing model was one pop-up event a month in places as varied as the mouth of Anhinga Trail in the Everglades, the Miami Science Museum Planetarium, and Redland Market Village surrounded by a

15-piece mariachi band.

Everyone received one free book until 2024, Bookleggers shifted from first book free to unlimited free books alongside voluntary monetary Donations.

At Bookleggers, we believe that books are a basic human right and that access to stories builds stronger, more connected communities.

We are guided by the values of equity, joy, and collective care, working to ensure that children and families, especially those historically underserved, can see themselves reflected in the books they read.

We value community and partnerships to shape our work.

We embrace creativity and play as essential to learning and imagination.

We act with radical generosity and above all, we believe in the transformative power of books to foster curiosity, empathy, and

belonging in Miami and beyond.
